A fire detection system is the first line of defense in a fire — it doesn't extinguish anything, but it warns early enough for people to leave the building and for response teams to act before a fire spreads.
What the system consists of
- Fire alarm control panel — the brain of the system, receiving signals and triggering notification.
- Detectors — smoke, heat, combined, or flame detectors, depending on the environment.
- Manual call points — buttons placed along evacuation routes.
- Notification devices — sirens, visual indicators, and in larger buildings, voice alarm systems.
Conventional vs. addressable systems
In conventional systems, the panel identifies which zone triggered an alarm, but not which specific detector. In addressable systems, every device has its own address — the panel shows exactly which detector triggered the signal, significantly reducing response time, especially in larger or more complex buildings.
Why the EN 54 standard matters
EN 54 is the European standard that fire detection system components — from detectors to the control panel — must comply with. An installation built with non-EN-54-certified components is not only unlawful; it also offers no real guarantee that the system will work when it's actually needed.
When it's legally required
The requirement depends on the building's purpose, floor area, the number of people it can hold at once, and its fire hazard classification. Retail spaces, industrial facilities, healthcare and public buildings almost always fall within scope — but the specific parameters need to be assessed for each building individually.
