Individual evacuation signs show where the exit is at one specific point. A Safety Way Guidance System (SWGS) under standard ISO 16069 goes a step further — it governs how a sequence of signs works together as an unbroken chain, so that at every point along the route, a person can clearly see where to go next, without gaps or ambiguity.
What the standard covers
ISO 16069 describes the design principles and application of the visual components of an entire guidance system — not just the shape of an individual sign (that's ISO 7010), but the placement strategy, the spacing between signs, direction of travel, and the continuity of visual information along the whole evacuation route.
Electrically powered and photoluminescent components
The standard covers both types of implementation:
- Electrically powered — illuminated signs, usually with emergency backup power in case of a power cut.
- Photoluminescent — materials that store light and glow in the dark without relying on electrical power — an important safeguard if power is lost during a fire.
Why continuity matters
During an actual evacuation — especially in smoke-filled conditions with reduced visibility — people aren't looking for "a sign," they're looking for a direction. A system where signs are broken up, too sparse, or inconsistent in direction can confuse evacuating occupants exactly when clarity matters most. That's why sign placement under ISO 16069 is designed together with evacuation lighting, not as a separate, afterthought element.
